! H O L I D A Y S !

As you can tell by the caption, this blog post will be about the HOLIDAYS! In exactly 33 days little children will be scrambling around like chickens with no head for HALLOWEEN! This means there are 12 Friday’s until CHRISTMAS! I am a lover beyond all things for this time of year; you can ask anyone who knows me that Christmas music begins playing in August for me! This time of year means love, hot cocoa, snuggle-time, and making “smoke” with your breath. I’ll begin explaining why I love Halloween and Christmas, which are two completely different holidays. Halloween is about being a true kid, I mean who doesn’t love dressing up?

Green goblins, pumpkins, black cats, and CANDY! Candy for days, to be exact. Halloween is an ancient holiday, going all the way back to the 18th century. It is a time of celebration and superstition. Thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a festival ending the harvest season and beginning the “Dark Winter”) when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. If I have done my correct research, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as a time to honor all saints; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later as we know today – Halloween. Children from all ages have put on layers of makeup, wigs, and fake teeth to dress up and go trick-or-treating. I thoroughly enjoy Halloween for two reasons; one – candy and two – I love the mystery, the guessing game of Halloween. Who is behind each mask, what character they are attempting to portray, the darkness and chill of Halloween is rather exciting. With this explain the pure bliss of Christmas.

Christmas – red and green, the smell of tree sap, cinnamon and an internal feeling of warmth. Christmas is not only about presents, food and family; no there is more to it. Jesus Christ was born on this day, se we should also celebrate his birthday. For thousands and thousands of years, people from all across the globe have celebrated this remarkable holiday. Personally, I genuinely love this specific holiday because despite a few of the average scrooge’s everyone seems to be in a happier more peaceful mood. Christmas isn’t just one day, from “Black Friday” until December 26th Christmas is in the air! Here is a little shocker, each year 30-35 million real Christmas trees are sold in the United States alone. There are 21,000 Christmas tree growers in the United States, and trees usually grow for about 15 years before they are sold. If you have ever had a real Christmas tree in the house, you’ll never be able to live down that fresh pine sap smell. Growing up we always had a real Christmas tree with big colorful lights and more presents under the tree than needed for a family of four. Love is the best part about this season. I fully believe that a love filled home is a Christmas filled home.

With all the holidays coming up remember that it isn’t about how much money you spend on someone, the amount of food you brought for Aunt Betty’s house party – it’s simply about love.

Do you have a favorite holiday?

Email me, I’d love to know!

Until next time!

  1. I’ve been waiting to read your posts, Miss Alford. I believe this is the first one? Or else I’ve been booted inadvertently from your mailing list. Anyway, nicely done. Any article on Samhain is a good one!
